Fortnite: Battle Royale’s v5.10 patch is out today, and it’s a big one. For one thing, it’s birthday time on the island: the battle bus is done up with streamers and there’s cake scattered around the island: you can eat some to regain some health, or you can dance in front of one to help you complete some special limited-time challenges. For some people, those will be the main changes, but for others, that’s just window dressing to the most important updates we’re seeing with v5.10. Building is getting a serious nerf, and that’s bound to cause some controversy in the community.

Let’s take a look at what we’re seeing. Health for all structures except metal is going down, and even metal now takes longer to build:

  • Wood wall starting health to 80 from 100.
  • Stone wall starting health to 80 from 90.
  • Wood wall max health to 150 from 200.
  • Metal wall max health to 500 from 400.
  • Metal build time to 25s from 20s.

In addition, base pickaxe damage to structures is increased to 75. This is going to make it a lot easier to shred an enemy’s base, particularly in squad modes or 50 vs. 50. Epic teased changes like this is an earlier update, saying that it wanted to make way for a broader range of viable endgame strategies. It was a controversial idea then, and it’s bound to be a controversial idea now. Fortnite has long been defined as a game in which the ability to master speedy building was every bit as powerful than the ability to shoot straight, and recent changes mean that players can get a little more mileage from traditional gunplay. Opponents of the changes argue that they undermine what makes Fortnite special, while Epic might argue that they make defensive-style gameplay and turtling less viable. Which is a big deal for a developer trying to figure out how to make its esports a little more exciting.

On top of that, we’ve also got the new epic and legendary-tier compact SMG. That might seem like an unrelated change, but top-level players are unlikely to see it as such. Epic has been tinkering with SMGs for a little bit now, and they’ve become some of the most powerful weapons in the game. And if you combine their high rate of fire with the recent building nerfs, you get a weapon thats perfectly designed for tearing down opponent’s structures. Accuracy doesn’t matter so much when you’re shooting at the broad side of a barn, after all.

That’s the biggest thing, by far. But there are plenty more tweaks and changes in this one. Slurp Juice is now less useless, and will offer a total of 75 points, filling up your health first and then your shield once health is full: that means it will give you a full 75 shield if you’re already at full health.

Epic also made fairly significant changes to the storm circle, lowering the amount of time it takes to start shrinking in every circumstance in a bid for faster gameplay.

Lastly, Playground Mode is coming back tomorrow, July 25, with some big changes. We’ll get into those more tomorrow, but the most important addition is the ability to split your squad into teams for some practice rounds.

All in all, this is looking like one of the more influential patches when it comes to high-level play in a little while. We’ll see how it all pans out.
