Destiny 2: Forsaken's Dreaming City Is Kind Of A Mess Right Now

Without question, one of the highlights of Destiny 2’s new Forsaken expansion is the Dreaming City, a new zone that you don’t have access to until the very end of the campaign, one that is among the most beautiful, and dangerous, Bungie has ever created, full of so many secrets and mysteries it will likely take players months or even years to puzzle them all out.

But even though the Dreaming City is a fantastic addition to Destiny…in theory, in practice, it’s suffering from a number of problems, most of them technical/gameplay related. Simply put, the zone is kind of a mess right now.

The main problem I’ve found with the Dreaming City is instancing. Instancing is how the game loads you into a zone and puts other players in that zone with you. A normal patrol zone might have you there with 1-2 other players. When an event is going on, maybe 3-5. The maximum, as we saw with Escalation Protocol on Mars, is 9. Instances will changes as you go from zone to zone, but…things work differently for some reason in the Dreaming City, and that’s creating a number of problems. Among them:

  • In general, the Dreaming City feels incredibly dead. Even though tens or hundreds of thousands of Forsaken players have access to it, the usual breakdown I see is 2-3 people in the first area, the Dvalian Mists, but most immediately leave to go see Petra in the second zone, the Strand, which usually has 1-2 people when you get there. The third zone, Rheasilvia, and all other side areas like the Gardens or Spine, have almost no one in them…ever.
  • The result is that it’s really hard to do even simple things like complete public events. Where you can go to any random public event on Earth or Titan and have five other people there helping, you’re lucky to get even three anywhere in the Dreaming City, and usually only in the first two zones.

  • Instancing also does not work like it normally does in other areas. For example, you can usually complete patrols in a zone, then reload into that zone and see them refresh. Not so in the Dreaming City which usually puts you back in the exact same instance you were just in, with no new patrols or material spawns. You have to go to orbit and back to see an actual change. This is also the case in Blind Well. Usually in other places you can go in and out of a zone in the hopes of matching with a new, more popular instance, and yet with the Blind Well, the majority of the time when you do this, even if you completely leave the zone, you will often find yourself re-entering the exact same underpopulated instance you were just in.
  • I’ve already written an entire article about how the Blind Well is another in a long series of missteps from Bungie, relying on these instances to randomly create populated groups to complete these tough activities, which is…very unreliable. It wasn’t a good idea in Court of Oryx, Archon’s Forge or Escalation Protocol, and it’s still not a good idea here, especially since Blind Well is flat-out required for something as essential as unlocking new subclasses.
  • I don’t know if this last point is tied to the Dreaming City’s instancing weirdness, but there is only a single landing point in the entire area, which I have to believe amplifies the problem of the other two zones being empty. And for some bizarre reason, the landing zone is a full minute-long sparrow ride to Petra, the Dreaming City NPC that you have to visit frequently, who is in another zone entirely.

The Dreaming City is a great area aesthetically and in terms of the challenges and mysteries it presents. But from a technical and gameplay perspective, it’s kind of a disaster. It’s too empty, too weirdly laid out in terms of what players have quick access to, and such a nice zone deserves better.

Bungie said that the Dreaming City would be changing as time goes on, and hopefully some of the changes fix the kinds of issues I’m talking about. For now, I don’t need more mysteries and enemies, I just need this zone to function better, and I don’t think I’m alone.
