On Massive News Day, Rachel Maddow, MSNBC Dominate Ratings

MSNBC and its star host Rachel Maddow dominated ratings Tuesday, a day packed with political news, including the conviction in court for former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and a plea deal for Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen. According to ratings data released Wednesday by Nielsen, The Rachel Maddow Show was the most-watched program not just in cable news, but across all of cable television with a total audience of 3.89 million viewers–the second largest audience in the show’s history.

Maddow also finished in first place among viewers 25-54, the demographic most coveted by advertisers, with 881,000 viewers–pushing past Fox News’ top-rated Sean Hannity and into the top five programs on cable, behind WWE Smackdown on USA Network and Big Bang Theory on TBS.

Fox News, the longtime number one cable news network, did win the 5 p.m. ET hour when news broke about Manafort and Cohen, with more than 3 million viewers watching in that hour.

But as the night–and the news–wore on, MSNBC took the lead, ending Tuesday with half of the top ten shows in all of cable: Maddow (first) The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell (second), followed by All In with Chris Hayes (sixth), Hardball with Chris Matthews (seventh) and The 11th Hour with Brian Williams (tenth). The rest of the top ten went to Fox News (Sean Hannity was third, Tucker Carlson fourth and Laura Ingraham took eighth) with the exception of USA’s WWE Smackdown (ninth place).

Fox News won overall ratings for daytime but posted a rare second-place finish in prime, with an average total audience of 2.948 million viewers. MSNBC led with 3.296 million, and CNN finished well behind in third place with 1.741 million.

CNN’s highest-rated hour on the day was Cuomo Prime Time at 9 p.m., which drew a total audience of 1.826 million viewers.
