WARNING: This article contains potential spoilers from Outlander season 4 & Drums of Autumn
Season four of Outlander will be hitting screens in November this year with a release date set to be announced soon.
The new run will feature 13 episodes which will be based on Drums of Autumn, the fourth novel from the Outlander book series by Diana Gabaldon.
US network Starz recently dropped a trailer for Outlander season four which offered up lots of clues about what to expect.
Mid-way through the trailer Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe) found a skull, which left her shocked to the core.
Claire showed the skull to her husband (Sam Heughan) and told him: “Jamie, it’s a silver filling, something that won’t be invented for another hundred years.”
Later in the trailer Claire says to Jamie: “What if it was a warning from the future?”
From the teaser, it appears that there will indeed be time travellers turning up in North Carolina in the 18th Century.
It also seems likely that characters from different eras will also be ending up in this point in time, suggesting that there could be a portal nearby through which travellers are arriving.
As fans will remember, Claire wasn’t the only one who managed to make it through the stones and travel back in time.
Geillis Duncan (Lotte Verbeek) also managed to travel back in time and was planning to change the course of history but was thwarted by Jamie and Claire in season three before she could do so.
Fans will have to wait and see who comes back in time, but it seems likely that there will be more travellers.
Just like Geillis, there may be a time traveller who has managed to go back into the past and hide in plain sight as they plot away with a secret agenda.
On top of that, could a villainous character perhaps come back in time to change the course of history and the outcome of the brewing American Revolutionary War?
While this is all speculation, it seems likely that audiences will discover why a skull with silver fillings from the future has ended up a century earlier.
The skull suggests that people from different eras – rather than just the 20th Century – have the ability to time travel.
There is a sense that the skull is going to be significant to season four and an important part of Outlander going forward as the story expands out.
Speaking on Live with Kelly and Ryan, lead star Heughan recently teased: “It’s an incredible new season.
“We’re in America and it’s in its infancy, the creation of America, and there are a lot of characters that come back from the past… or is it the future?”
Again, this suggests that time travel will play a much bigger role than ever before in the show.
In another interview with Entertainment Tonight, he went on to say about the last episode: “It’s great it’s been a super, super amazing finale.
“Actually, I think it’s our strongest finale, this season four is gonna be really strong.”
He added: “And it’s a whole new world.”
Outlander season 4 will premiere on Amazon Prime this November
