When Is The July 2018 Blood Moon?

The month of July will hold the longest total lunar eclipse of this century according to astronomers. Many are now referring to it as Blood Moon 2018.

This blood moon and total lunar eclipse combo will outshine every other eclipse to take place between the years 2001 and 2100!

Blood Moon 2018 will last one hour and 43 minutes, nearly 40 minutes longer than our most recent Super Blue Blood Moon combo that took place on January 31st of this year.

McClure went on to say, “A partial eclipse precedes and follows the century’s longest total lunar eclipse, each time lasting one hour and six minutes. So, from start to finish, the moon takes nearly four hours to cross the Earth’s dark umbral shadow.”

During the course of the eclipse, when the moon is passing through the shadow cast by planet Earth, the moon will display a deep red and orange color, rather than just disappearing from sight like you might expect.

The partial lunar eclipse will begin at 6:24pm UTC and the full show will begin an hour later at 7:30pm UTC. The total eclipse will come to an end by 9:13pm UTC and the moon will be visible in whole again at 10:19pm UTC.

Why Is The Lunar Eclipse So Long?

<p class="canvas-atom canvas-text Mb(1.0em) Mb(0)–sm Mt(0.8em)–sm" type="text" content="This July, the full moon and the lunar apogee fall on the exact same date. July 27th, 2018. July 27th, 2018. Lunar apogee is the moon’s farthest orbital point from Earth, making the moon appear extremely small and distant.

Bruce McClure again stated: “Sometimes called an apogean full moon, or micro-moon or mini-moon, this smaller and slower-moving full moon takes more time to cross the Earth’s shadow than does a full moon that’s closer to Earth and moving faster in orbit.”

“That’s why a full moon at or near lunar apogee adds to the duration of a total lunar eclipse. The longest possible total lunar eclipse is one hour and 47 minutes.”
