Niantic Confirms Good News About This Weekend's Articuno Raid Day Reward

Pokemon GO

Pokémon GO has an entire summer of live events planned that will result in global prizes for players. We’re through the first Safari Zone in Germany, with another in Japan to follow in August. Between then will be Pokémon GO Fest in Chicago, where players will apparently be tasked with catching Celebi.

But before we get ahead of ourselves, we’re about to get the first grand prize from the original Safari Zone, one that was unlocked when players completed the rather easy task (apparently) of doing 5 million research tasks per region over the course of the weekend.

Now, that’s unlocked a three hour raid window for Articuno this Saturday, but not just any Articuno, one that should have a decent chance of being shiny.

Players have been spreading the news that unfortunately, Articuno was not going to be the only legendary to pop out of tier 5 eggs during that window, however. One Niantic support agent said that Regice, the currently rotating legendary, would also be showing up during that time. That got players riled up because you wouldn’t want to waste time going to a tier 5 raid during that short window, only to find it’s a Regice spawn that can appear any other time in the entire month.

But since then, Niantic seems to have confirmed that this is not the case, that Articuno will be the only legendary spawning from tier 5 raids during this window, so you can feel free to camp on those eggs without worrying about wasting your time with a Regice.

For some players, this isn’t far enough, and I think I might have to agree.

Many players are saying that all raids during this window should actually be Articuno raids, regardless of what the tier would normally be.

Honestly, I think this is a good call. Keep in mind this is just a three hour window, not for catches like Community Day, but for full-on raids. If players have only that amount of time to try to catch an Articuno, it would be kind of a bummer if depending on their area, they only got access to one or two raids at best. Making every raid spawn Articuno for three hours seems like a better idea. Players are getting five free raid passes as part of this event, but clearly Niantic could make money selling more if every raid was Articuno for a limited time.

If this event was for an entire week or weekend, I would think this would be too extreme, but given that it’s just a three hour window, I’d be amazed if most players are going to be able to even use all five passes on Articuno, unless those tier 5 raid spawns are dramatically increased. Also unlike Community Day, where you can still catch or hatch Squirtle or Dratini or Mareep or whatever later, raid bosses only rotate every so often. There’s no telling when Articuno will get another full rotation or appear in research rewards for another chance at a shiny. So yes, I think they really should pull out all the stops for this small reward window.

We’ll see what happens Saturday, as the Articuno festival at 11 AM PT tomorrow. And if I had to guess, we’ll see Zapdos and Moltres as rewards for the next two events as well. Happy shiny hunting this weekend, you’ll need all the luck you can get.
