Woman returns to US after terrifying parasailing accident

(Meredith) — A California woman survived a vacation nightmare. While parasailing in Mexico, Katie Malone’s tether to the boat snapped and she drifted in the wind for 45 minutes before crashing into the ground. She was severely injured with a fractured pelvis, ribs, and skull, as well as a collapsed and bleeding lung. She also suffered several facial injuries.

Her Father Kelly Malone told Fox5, "It’s one of those calls you never want to take and of course you’re thinking the worst."

Kelly Malone and other members of the family went to Mexico to visit her in the hospital. The initial surgeries went well, but they soon found out she needed treatment in the U.S. The head trauma caused complications with Katie Malone’s pituitary gland, an important hormone-producing gland in your brain, and doctors recommended she seek treatment from specialists in the U.S.

To help pay for the Life Flight back home, the family set up a GoFundMe page and even their congressman got involved. Former U.S. Representative Duncan L. Hunter helped make financial arrangements to bring her home. Katie’s brother Brendan said it was great to see the community come together to help.

“Community is a real thing, and it still exists out there. This is people doing the neighborly thing for other people, and if you be better to your neighbor, you’re going to have better neighbors. That’s how Katie is, and that’s how we were raised, to be there for everyone,” he said.

Katie is now recovering in UCSD Medical Center in San Diego. Though she may not walk for months, Katie is expected to make a full recovery.
