Jetpacks are finally, officially blasting off in Fortnite.
Epic Games first announced the arrival of jetpacks way back in February, but since then the closest thing we’ve seen to that are hop rocks.
Today, a new in-game update confirms earlier leaks that jetpacks will finally be arriving in Fortnite. It seems likely that they will be included in tomorrow’s update, but almost certainly before the start of Week 5 next week. [See update below.]
We know that because of dataminers who found a Week 5 challenge in the game’s data files that mentions using a jetpack. Dataminers also found a new Shotguns limited time mode called ‘Close Encounters’ with the following description:
“Close quarters combat with Shotguns & Jetpacks! If you find a jetpack, double-tap the jump button to take off. Keep the button held down to apply thrust. Make sure to land before it runs out of fuel!”
Sounds like a pretty typical video game jetpack not all that different from a character like Pharah in Overwatch.
In any case, it seems likely that the jetpack will be dropping soon along with a new shotgun/jetpack LTM. If you thought hitting someone with a shotgun while they bunny-hopped all around you was a pain in the rear already, you’ll love this new mode where hopping is replaced with jetpacks.
In any case, it should be interesting to see how jetpacks change up the game. I can’t imagine they’ll be around for long given they’re described as a limited time item. I guess we’ll see soon enough.
Also: What happens when you have a jetpack and you consume a hop rock? These are the important questions that must be answered.
Update: Epic Games has confirmed that the jetpack will arrive tomorrow at 8 am ET.
