'Sea Of Thieves' Servers Going Down For Maintenance Tomorrow, March 24

If you’re aiming to conquer the high seas, collect booty and navigate the murky waters of matchmade co-op with shipmates and enemies, maybe don’t plan on doing it tomorrow morning. Rare will be taking&nbsp;Sea of Thieves&nbsp;servers offline for maintenance&nbsp;from 9:00 AM GMT –&nbsp; 2:00 PM GMT, or 5:00 AM EST — 10:00 AM EST.&nbsp; And while that’s a fairly discrete, if extended, unit of time, remember that maintenance on any game could go on for longer or shorter than what the developer has planned for — video games are complicated things. It’s the first of two upcoming server maintenance period, the second of which will be coming on Tuesday, March 27.

Sea of Thieves&nbsp;has had some technical problems at launch due to a massive influx of players — 1 million in the first 48 hours, according to the developer. We’re seeing login&nbsp;issues at peak hours, problems&nbsp;with achievements, missing items and more. Rare temporarily suspended new players joining the game near launch, but problems continued after that. For a complete list of problems the game is seeing at launch as well as dos and don’ts concerning in-game items, check out Rare’s developer update here.&nbsp;

The high player count is likely due to Xbox Game Pass, which lets anyone who wants to play the game the game with a $10 subscription&nbsp;or even a 14-day free trial: it’s an uncommonly cheap way to try out a new AAA game. And that’s a good thing, because Sea of Thieves is a strange sort of title that we’ve never really seen before: the entire game revolves around an intense co-op experience that sees you and other players trying to do your best to cooperate in running a ship, from firing cannons to dropping anchor, trimming sails and scanning the horizon for enemies. For all its innovation it’s dramatically light on content, and that hasn’t helped reviews scores. Rare has promised more content to come in the future, but many are still wondering why we’ll&nbsp;have to wait until after launch to get a complete game.

Step one will be ironing out the technical issues, of course. I’ve got a soft spot for this game in spite of its obvious shortcomings, and I’ve love to see a version of it come to life in which not only are there innovative gameplay systems but things to do&nbsp;with them, as well. We’ll see.
